Chapter 4

With the informations received by Savoy, James and Carl find Mary. She seems sincerely sorry for the fate that befell Carl, but she explains she was forced to embrace him, or she would have been destroyed. Carl seems to take pity on her, and allows her to leave New Orleans. The two newborn will later report to Maldonato that they've "taken care of the problem".

Flashback

It is the afternoon of Mardi Gras. Manipulated by the Kindred Sarah, James and Carl end up in a Jazz club, where they come into contact with different Kindred. Each of them seems to be "choosing" a young man or woman to accompany him or her to the Louis Armstrong Park before midnight.

Carl is chosen by a prostitute named Mary, while James is chosen by a bussiness man named Nathaniel. At the park, other three Kindred with their victims, plus Sarah, await them to perform what they call "an experiment".

The young men and women are Embraced, then Sarah erases their memories. When they wake up, all Carl will remember is the name "Sarah", and a vague image of her face. James remembers the last words his maker told him "Miss Opal can help you."
