Chapter 7

James tries to catch up with Carl, but he has an accident with his car on the way, and he's forced to hide in a cabin in the woods on the side of the highway.

Carl is still driving when the sun raises, and decides to stop at a gas station. Inside, he finds several slaughtered bodies, and a bestial creature feasting (probably a werewolf). He manages to not keep the creature at bay, and the murderer leaves. Carl hides among the corpses. When night falls, police agents arrive at the scene, and Carl maanges to escape.

He's not able to retrieve the van with the slaves, and he decides to hide in the woods, calling for Alexander's help. The fellow kindred arrives and retrieves both Carl and James.

Back in New Orleans, James arranges for some local thugs to go back to Matheson's mansion during daylight and set it on fire. Hopefully the ancient kindred will perish, and not exact revenge. Hopefully.

Carl and James investigate the whereabout of Lucas Gates, one of the kindred responsible for their embrace. While searching, they are summoned by Antoine Savoy, who offers to help them by letting them drink his blood, an act that would increase their powers, while at the same time creating a "connection" with Savoy. Suspecting an hidden price, the two young kindred decline.

Not much later, they're invited by an emissary of Prince Vidal to attend a night mass. When they arrive at the church, a great congregation of kindred awaits, while the Prince stands at the altar, ready to begin the sacrament.
